Tamales Festival At La Tortilleria
‘Día de la Candelaria’ is a significant Mexican celebration held on 2 February. Like many festivals and holidays in Mexico, La Candelaria is a fusion of Catholic and indigenous traditions. One tradition on this day is to make, share and eat lots of tamales with your family and friends. For the uninitiated, tamales are small parcels of corn dough with meat or vegetarian filling, then steamed in either a corn husk or banana leaf, depending on which state of Mexico you’re in.
CELEBRATE AND EAT TAMALES WITH US
In celebration of Día de la Candelaria, we’ve got a special tamales menu on all weekend at our eatery in Melbourne, from Friday 1st Feb until Sunday 3rd Feb 2019. This is a rare opportunity to taste authentic tamales made with freshly ground nixtamal corn dough. We get many requests for our tamales, and we don’t make them often (a lot of time and skill goes into them!). We’ll also have the traditional Aztec drink atole, our usual full menu, and a whole lot of festivities all weekend long. The Mexican traditions of this day will be on display, including mazorcas (corn offerings to usher in a good harvest) and el niño Dios dolls. Bookings highly advised.
ORDER TAMALES FOR PICK UP
You can also order tamales to pick up and take home for your own celebrations, or just to stock up! Order before Monday 5pm 28th January 2019 to avoid missing out.
We’ll be making 6 authentic tamales:
Tinga de Pollo (Chicken Tinga)
Oaxaca Cheese with Pinto Beans
Chicharron en Salsa Verde (Pork in Green Salsa)
Carne Deshebrada (Shredded Beef with Ancho Chilli)
Frijoles Norteños (vegan beans)
Dulces de Piña (pineapple dessert tamal)
These are for pick up only, Friday 1st and Saturday 2nd February at our eatery in Kensington, Melbourne.
We are makers of award-winning traditional corn tortillas and tortilla chips, sold Australia-wide
