Are flour tortillas or corn tortillas healthier?

Corn tortillas are generally the healthier choice, particularly when produced using traditional nixtamalization. They provide a wholegrain, gluten-free alternative to the refined wheat flour found in standard flour tortillas.

The primary health difference lies in the processing method, as traditional nixtamalization unlocks nutrients that are often missing in instant corn flour or wheat-based wraps.

The Nixtamalization Advantage

Traditional corn tortillas are made from masa, a dough created by soaking whole corn kernels in an alkaline solution before stone-grinding them. When we stone-grind our corn fresh each day rather than using instant masa harina, we preserve the whole grain integrity and avoid synthetic additives. This ancient process makes the tortillas stronger and more nutrient-dense than refined flour alternatives.

Dietary and Nutritional Benefits

Corn tortillas are naturally gluten-free, vegan, and FODMAP friendly, making them a versatile choice for diverse Australian dietary needs. Our tortillas contain only Australian white corn and a pinch of sea salt, ensuring they remain free from trans fats and non-GMO ingredients. For specific medical dietary requirements or chronic health conditions, we recommend consulting a GP or accredited dietitian.

Texture and Sensory Differences

Flour tortillas are often processed to be bland and stretchy, whereas nixtamalized corn tortillas offer a distinct aromatic depth and a hearty, corn-forward taste. Customers at our Kensington tortilleria often remark on the malleability and the authentic smell of fresh masa that is completely absent in supermarket flour wraps. Substituting flour for corn changes the dish from a heavy, doughy base to a light, fragrant vessel that complements salsas and fillings.

Finding Authentic Corn Tortillas in Australia

Authentic nixtamalized corn tortillas are genuinely hard to find in mainstream supermarkets like Coles or Woolworths, which primarily stock flour wraps or instant-mix corn products. You can purchase our traditional range through our store, selected independent grocers, or online.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are corn tortillas suitable for a Low FODMAP diet?
In October 2014 Monash University gave corn tortillas an overall rating of Green, meaning they are suitable for a low FODMAP diet.

Are your tortillas and tortilla chips free of major food allergens?
Yes, our production kitchen is 100% free from major allergen ingredients such as gluten, nuts, soy, seafood, dairy and eggs.

Are your tortillas and tortilla chips gluten free?
All our products are gluten free and are produced in a 100% gluten free facility.

Are your tortillas and tortilla chips vegan?
La Tortilleria tortillas and tortilla chips contain no enzymes or mysterious non-vegan additives. Our corn tortillas and our totopos are both certified by the Vegan Society and carry the vegan logo.

Do your tortillas or totopos (tortilla chips) contain trans fat or hydrogenated oil?
No, definitively not! Our products are 100% trans fat free.

Are your tortillas made from white corn or yellow corn?
White corn! White corn is the most common type of corn used for traditional tortilla making, that’s what we use. Our tortillas may appear more yellow than other white corn tortillas you’ve seen; this is because we do not add any preservatives that often act as ‘bleaches’ to make tortillas appear whiter than they naturally would be.

Are your tortillas and totopos free of GMO (genetically modified organisms)?
At this point in time, La Tortilleria corn tortillas are the only certified non-GMO corn tortillas in Australia. Both our tortillas and totopos carry the Cert-ID Non-GMO certification logo.
